Gung Ho is the story of a middle American town that relies on automobile manufacturing to survive. But when a Japanese company buys the car plant and suddenly wants to pull out, the town sends Hunt Stevenson (Michael Keaton) to speak on their behalf. Hunt convinces the Japanese to keep the plant open but they send in their own administrative team from Japan. The town doesn’t take too kindly to the outsiders and Hunt befriends and sticks up for one whom he feels a kinship too, Oishi Kazihiro (Gedde Watanabe). Now Hunt finds himself having to justify his own job and forced to deal with downsizing and laying off his good, close friends like Buster (George Wendt) who is always singled out by the Japanese Administration. Just when it couldn’t get any worse, the home office in Japan sends an ultimatum; produce 1000 cars by the end of the week or close up shop. Now Hunt has to bridge the gap between the East and the West and pray he can keep everyone’s job safe.
