Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his wife, Ellen, live a placid but uninteresting life in the suburbs with their two children, Audrey and Rusty. One day, the family competes on a game show entitled "Pig in a Poke", where they surprise themselves and everyone else by managing to win a trip to Europe. With no real foreign travelling experience to speak of, the family sets off on their European vacation. In London, Clark's driving is a menace to the other drivers when he cannot adjust to driving on the left side of the road. Oblivious to the chaos he is causing, he continues on, managing to destroy Stonehenge in the process. Comical misfortune continues to dog the family throughout their trip. In France, a local resident steals their camera, while in Rome, Ellen is kidnapped by terrorists. Despite all of this, the family must work out how to stick together and somehow make it back to the United States in one piece.
