This movie is based on a true story. Story is about a writer Clifford Irving (Richard Gere). He is not a typical criminal. He is a classy, elegant, polished, smooth charmer with the face that doesn't reveal anything. Irving is so impatient to start his career. He convinces people that the famous bilionaire Howard Hughes is his friend and that he is telling him his life story. His fellow writer Dick Suskind (Alfred Molina) helps him in the research of Hughes. And he writes a fake biography. Seeing this as a big success, a publishing house gives him a great offer. Suddenly, Irving finds himself in a totally new world, the world of publishing...
